BADABOOM

Has any Sam Rockwell project ever failed to deliver? Thought not.

Right in his smarmy, slovenly, charming wheelhouse, Rockwell carries this messy British backstabbing caper with a whiplash plot, a steady stream of ridiculous characters, plenty of yuks and plenty of blood.

How about a romantic interest who is an abominably messy eater? How about a snappy, chirpy wingman who carries a tampon for the inevitable bullet hole plug? How about a wild-eyed antagonist who sports a gloriously greasy mullet? No more spoilers. Suffice to say, there's plenty here to devour.

There's a big blue diamond at the centre of all the troubles, but that merely serves as a simple table setter for all the tomfoolery. What starts as an absurdist comedic heist, quickly turns to dangerous levels where everyone seems over their heads. Among the many small highlights littering this movie, is a chaotic pub shoot out where bottles and glasses are the chief victims. Turns out the Brits are terrible, terrible shots.

There's plenty of holes in the plot, but the free flowing vibe saves the day. Stop trying to make any sense of "Blue Iguana", and just enjoy the trip.

Very funny British crime caper comedy

Bumbling small-time American ex-cons Eddie (an excellent performance by Sam Rockwell) and Paul (nicely played by Ben Schwartz) are hired by cute London lawyer Katherine Rockwood (an appealing portrayal by Phoebe Fox) to steal a rare jewel that ruthless mobster Arkady (a smooth turn by Peter Polycarpou) also wants to get his hands on.

Writer/director Hai Hajaig relates the enjoyably screwball story at a brisk pace, maintains an amiable lighthearted tone throughout, stages the exciting action with plomb, and elicits loads of big laughs from the blithely anarchic sense of gut-busting humor. Rockwell and Schwartz display a pleasingly loose and natural comic rapport while the super fetching Fox makes for an ideal long-suffering foil for their hysterically inept antics. In addition, there are sturdy supporting contributions from Peter Ferdinando as brutish flunky Deacon Bradshaw, who sports a hilariously hideous mullet; Al Weaver as the easygoing Tommy Tresham, Simon Callow as the cultured Uncle Martin, and Amanda Donohoe as saucy barmaid Dawn. A total hoot.

Sorry, you don't have what it takes to write a Monty Python style comedy.

Obviously someone saw "A Fish Called Wanda" far too many times and decided to write something that they thought would resemble it in one way or another. The only thing that this resembles is a dead fish, kinkier than the room that Amanda Donahue rents for a bunch of American dudes she gathers together for an offer they supposedly can't with you. The only offer that I couldn't refuse would be to go to a psychiatrist and erase this film from my memory.

I suppose they thought they were being clever when they took veteran British character actor Simon Callow and a bunch of other unknown British character actors who appear sophisticated while reading smut. All it does is come off as desperate and lame. In the delightfully tasteless comedy 'A Fish Called Wanda", the script by John Cleese was witty and sophisticated, and even the bad taste humor got chuckles because of the situation. This is instantly forgettable, violent and crude, with only the oversexed female bartender remotely funny. I call this one the nightmare of the Iguana.
