Better Than Expected, Though No Masterpiece

Two brothers must travel to Germany with their grandfather's ashes. In Germany, they discover a secret competition -- Beerfest -- and vow to win in the following year to restore honor to their grandfather, who was accused of stealing the world's greatest beer recipe.

This film is written by and stars the Broken Lizard team, the guys who brought you "Super Troopers" and "Club Dead". As such, I feel obligated to compare the three films. "Super Troopers" is the best of the three, by far. "Club Dead" is by far the worst (I don't know if anyone I know likes that film). Which leaves "Beerfest" in the middle. The film is funny in places, but in others is just really stupid or poorly scripted. And the plot is too thin to really add up to much (it's 2 hours of people drinking beer).

Some good parts include the German insults and a scene where we find the team waking up in strange places after a night of hard drinking. But then there's the bad. One scene is really long, showing what happens when you take a woman home from the bar drunk. The joke is obvious and could have been summed up in 30 seconds rather than the ten minutes I was subjected to.

The characters are decent, especially "Landfill" (played by the the guy who played Farva in "Super Troopers") and "Fink" (although the frog masturbation was probably more juvenile than was really necessary). I appreciated some of the more subtle Jewish humor revolving around Fink, since most of the jokes were very blunt and sophomoric.

As far as comedies go, better ones exist. 2006 gave us "Borat" and "Talladega Nights". By comparison, "Beerfest" is just the Red Dog of annual comedies.

The Perfect Combination: Beer and Fun

After the death of their grandfather Johann von Wolfhaus (Donald Sutherland),the brothers Jan (Paul Soter) and Todd Wolfhouse (Erik Stolhanske) travel to Munich to fulfill a family tradition, spreading the ashes of Johann during the Oktoberfest. Their contact brings them to a secret beer competition, the Beerfest", where they are offended by Baron Wolfgang von Wolfhausen (Juergen Prochnow) and the German branch of their family that accuse their grand grandmother of being a prostitute and their grandfather of stealing an old receipt of the best beer in Germany. Jan and Todd returns to USA humiliated and decide to organize a beer team to dispute the next Beerfest. They join Landfill (Kevin Heffernan),Barry (Jay Chandrasekhar) and Fink (Steve Lemme) and train long the year to participate in the competition. When they find the lost receipt hidden in a dummy, they feel that their German relatives told the truth. But the team is ready for the tough dispute.

"Beerfest" is one of those silly, scatological and politically incorrect mindless movies that are not accepted by professional critics, but entertains and makes laugh ordinary viewers like me. It is certainly necessary to shutdown the brain and stop thinking to enjoy the low-level and gross jokes, but what is better than watching this type of film to relieve the daily stress of work and personal problems? I confess that I love to watch every now and then this type of comedy which changes my mood for better with a perfect combination of beer and fun. The participation of Willie Nelson in the end is hilarious and a good hook for a "Potfest". My vote is six.

OK comedy until someone gets killed

At Johann von Wolfhause's funeral, his grandsons Jan and Todd are told to travel to Munich and spread his ashes during Oktoberfest. They cause mayhem and lose in an underground drinking tournament called Beerfest run by Baron Wolfgang von Wolfhausen (Jürgen Prochnow). They are told that Johann stole the recipe of the greatest beer and their Gam Gam was a prostitute. They go home vowing revenge by recruiting their college friends Landfill, Barry and Fink for an American Beerfest team.

There is the general silliness from the Broken Lizard crew. It's got a few chuckles in a lot of stupidity. Everybody is mugging for the camera and nobody is playing the straight man. It's a functional comedy until a likable lead character gets killed. It's a real buzz-kill and the rest of the movie feels like a hangover. For me, it's a 6 until the death.
