Fails to pack a punch

Love anything to do with Batman and any superhero or supervillain, animated or live-action. Also like to love a lot of the animated superhero/comic book films, so part of me was expecting a great deal from 'Batman and Harley Quinn'.

Sadly, 'Batman and Harley Quinn' turned out to be a big disappointment in ways that have been summed up very well in previous reviews, not much to add. It isn't as bad as 'Batman and Robin', it takes a lot for any superhero film to be as bad as that (there's a reason as to why whenever there is a film part of a franchise that disgraces the franchise it is likened as "the 'Batman and Robin' of..."). That however doesn't stop it from failing drastically to live up to its potential.

There are plus points. Kevin Conroy and Loren Lester do a great job as Batman (as one would expect, Conroy is without equal as the character) and Nightwing. Some of the animation is meticulous in detail, faithfully drawn and brooding, other parts though could have done with a lot more care and refinement (there are lapses in continuity here and there). The music is atmospheric and pulsating.

However, most of the voice actors don't fit the characters. Melissa Rauch is a very awkward fit for Harley and Paget Brewster has done much better work than her fairly anaemic Poison Ivy. The characters are poorly written, either being flimsy in development or personality or out of character.

Much of the dialogue doesn't work, the darker dramatic elements ring hollow and the comedic approach to other parts jars. The jokes are not funny and are incredibly juvenile and forced, while the more serious nature of the story is hampered by over-reliance on over-convenient plot devices, dull pacing, lack of coherence and some scenes being irrelevant. The much panned sex scene particularly is completely out of place. Tonally the film is all over the place and incredibly disjointed, and the ending is highly suggestive of the writers running out of ideas because it is the complete anti-thesis of going out with a bang.

Overall, disappointing and fails to pack a punch. 3/10 Bethany Cox

Little Boy Wonder all Grown Up

Batman and "Darkwig" need the help of Harley to combat Poison Ivy and save the world. It seems inter-dimensional dryads want to remake the DNA of life because man has destroyed the planet through man made global warming and voting Democrat is too difficult. Okay not the best plot but it does have a cat fight, a super-hero implied sex scene, fart humor, and Harley shaking her upper torso on stage. I liked the dialogue even if the plot didn't make it. I thought Harley's NY accent was over done.

Guide: Implied sex, A-word, S-word, a WT-near F word. I would say a male tween appeal.

Hardly a memorable or outstanding addition to the Batman legacy...

Now, I don't call myself a fan of the superhero genre, but at least the Batman concept is a less bitter pill to swallow as he relies on gadgets and doesn't fly around with otherworldly powers. And while I don't go out of my way to get to watch the numerous Batman animated movies, then I do occasionally get to watch one every now and then.

I had no particular expectations to "Batman and Harley Quinn" when I sat down to watch it with my son. And I must admit that I didn't find "Batman and Harley Quinn" to be an outstanding addition to the legacy of Batman in any particular way.

The story was bland and it seemed a bit rushed and forced, which spilled over into the overall enjoyment of this 2017 animated movie. It hardly seemed like it was a necessary storyline to the Batman universe.

As for the animation and art style, well it was adequate. But it was leaning too much towards a kiddie animation for my liking, and by that I mean resembling the style from the animated Batman series.

The voice acting, however, was quite good. And having proper voice actors in an animated movie is a make or break situation. However, I didn't recognize any of the voices, and had to look it up here on IMDb to check who actually voiced the different characters.

"Batman and Harley Quinn" probably cash in on the success of the Harley Quinn character from the "Suicide Squad" movie.

My rating of "Batman and Harley Quinn" is a very mediocre 5 out of 10 stars.
