Very mediocre movie that was lacking horror elements...

I enjoy horror and Cantonese cinema, so of course I would sit down to watch "Always Be With You" (aka "Seung joi nei for yau") when I happened to get the chance in 2020. Granted, I hadn't even heard about this 2017 movie from writer and director Herman Yau before I had a chance to sit down and watch it physically.

But with a cast that includes well-establish Hong Kong actors and actresses like Louis Koo, Charlene Choi, Charmaine Sheh, Suet Lam, Ka Tung Lam and horror veteran Lan Law, what was not to like?

The movie does start out well enough being interesting and offering lots of interesting things for the audience, but then along halfway through the movie it starts to lose its moment, and towards the end it was just like "isn't the movie soon finished?". The movie's story is somewhat strange and chaotic, seeming to have very little red thread throughout it. It was predictable, unfortunately.

While the actors and actresses were performing well enough, they just suffered terribly from the lack of a properly interesting script and storyline. This ultimately sent the movie into mediocrity for me.

While "Always Be With You" is listed as a horror and thriller, I will say that if you sit down to watch it for the horror aspect, like I did, you will be sorely disappointed, because there was very little horror to be found in the movie. It should be listed more of a supernatural thriller, not a horror thriller.

I am rating "Always Be With You" a mediocre five out of ten stars. While it was watchable, this is not a movie that warrants a second viewing. Nor is it a movie that displays the best performance of any of the casted actors and actresses. I have now watched it once, and can honestly say that I will not be returning to watch it a second time.

Horror anthology in Hong-Kong style

Always Be with You directed by Herman Yau is a interesting horror anthology from Hong Kong that require you to really know about Asian culture to fully appreciate or else it will come out really weird. The movie is well shot and the acting is good but i'm afraid the horror element is not as strong as you may though. There some creepy moment here and there but the strongest point of the movie is the drama between characters.

The Best Ghost Film of 2017: Evolution of Troublesome Night From Anthology to Ensemble!

Ghost Anthology franchise, Troublesome Night is well known for 20 titles including this one. Anthology films provided opportunities for independently financed genre filmmakers of Hong Kong. It also developed the most important genre filmmaker Herman Yau who is seemed to be Hong Kong's Tobe Hooper or Roger Corman.

Contrary to Troublesome Night (1997),this 20th.anniversary film 'Always Be With You'(2017) is well marketed by Halloween campaign that audiences who take shots with ghost costumed staff at theaters can get 2,000 HKD. This kind of Thanks-for purchasing ticket campaign also does not depend on stars to appear at cinemas. It actually hit the first weekend box office.

About the film, you can see traditional anthology is well organized into ensemble form in this film practice. It proved that anthology film can be reorganised into seamless ensemble film.

The car incident which mixed with suicide incident of Xiao-Hong provokes entire conflicts of this film. Stealer Zhi-qiang's escape from mafia and enigmatic ghost Xiao-Hong; causing of unrecognized Six-Sense-like death of cop Sam and his girl friend A-Si's love story, moreover the taxi driver David who accidentally kills resort house owner Patrick, and his girl friend involving in serial suicidal actions of guests at the resort house.

All of them are full of suicidal topic, and the filmmakers successfully expressed humanistic emotions and emotional reality through paranoia-like personality and twisted plots in this film. The range and extent are something deeper or unusual than Hollywood films' standard.

For example, you can see the taxi driver David who is doomed to uncuttable cancer tries to help Patrick's girl friend from the serial suicide scandals at her hotel where Patrick owned and named as 'Suicide Paradise' by HK media. What he does is hiding dead bodies by cutting and splitting them to cover the incidents.

This film's reality depends on urban legends that popular among HK society. Mainly it's ghost tale that ghosts who committing suicide by dropping off from typically high buildings. And also someone stealing dropped items is cursed by ghost. HK has no specific ghost character but the methods of involving curse is specific.

Film's reality and originally depend on real incidents, emotional reality and calculations of possibilities of certain dangers. We can see this film actually expressed our emotional reality. The main story of this ensemble drama is tale of Yu-xin and taxi driver Patrick.

Thank you all for this well made genre film of HK! Please keep it up!
