Wow! I sure must have missed something in American History at school....

.... Or more than likely I just wasn't taught the truth on this, like with so many other aspects of American History! I can't believe that I had no idea that this crap went on until the 1960's! Reading some of the reviews here after watching this movie I followed someone's comment suggesting people look into Mae Louise Miller if they wanted proof that this could have happened and I was shocked. I can't believe there were people who got away with slavery until my mothers generation here in America. There's no excuse for it and I can't believe it was possible, well, I can believe, but you know... What I truly can't believe are all the comments by people here claiming its all a bunch of "woke bs".... People in denial I guess. Pretty pathetic. Probably the same people that believe all the conspiracy theories out there and believe everything is a coverup yet when real situations like this are brought to light they claim its bs... Which makes no sense. But whatever.... That said, this movie was well done and as shocking as the reality of the concept was it made a great revenge story! Weaving reality with fiction making it a disturbing, yet entertaining movie.

Poor attempt

I fully sympathize with the struggle depicted in this movie. It's just not a good movie. Poorly-made in most aspects. Even worse, the concept is copied from another recent movie which is executed significantly better in every way. I can't say which movie because it would be a spoiler, but it came out in 2020 and it's awesome. (1 viewing, 6/14/2022)

SPOILERS

As we've seen many times, the morons who made the trailers ruined half the movie. You don't find out this takes place a century later until 40 minutes into the movie. It would have been a huge reveal. I don't understand how these trailer creators are allowed to continue to spoil major reveals.

When she escapes into the real world, her reactions and adjustment to the differences are not in the least bit believable. I'm not blaming the actress, I'm blaming the script.

This movie is filled with stupid parts and dumb character decisions. This is especially the case with the character played by Common. He thinks she has amnesia but doesn't question why she's asking if black people are free or about owners. Or if there are small people in the TV.

Then for some reason Alice is unable to explain something so basic, she lived her entire life on a plantation under the guise that slavery is still legal. He finally understands after the conversation she has with the owner's wife, but they don't even bother showing his reaction when he comes to that tragically shocking realization. And don't even get me started on the wife's logic to come talk to Alice and convince her they were being nice.

The last baffling reaction was when Alice finds out her husband is not actually dead. It's so underwhelming like the rest of this movie.

Is what it is...

This movie is what it is. I'm not sure you can call it good because it either needed more time to develop or less time spent developing. To anyone that thinks this is an "alternate reality" piece though, this kind of thing happened. Maybe not EXACTLY this kind of thing but black people in the deep south were denied freedom well into the 20th century (as late as 1963). Don't believe me, google Mae Louise Walls Miller, A little research might help you appreciate the premise more and perhaps break away from the THIS DOESN'T FIT IN WITH MY WORLD VIEW SO I AM GOING TO THROW MUD AT IT crowd. Just sayin'....
