In this sequel to the very popular "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective", Ace is in Africa getting into all sorts of silly nonsense. "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls" is definitely a guilty pleasure. While the film is very stupid and never tries to be anything else, it DID make me laugh...much like films like "Waterboy" and "Stepbrothers". A couple of the dumbest scenes had me almost falling on the floor laughing...such as when Ace gets spears in his legs and the scene where he's inside a fake rhino! Hardly intellectual faire....but funny. A great film to watch with friends....especially the sort of friends whose favorite DVDs don't come from the Criterion Collection!

I feel ashamed...but the film DID make me laugh!
Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy...
Actually, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls is not quite as bad as this summary suggests. Though that is not to say that this film is good, for me it isn't. The film does look good, it was interesting to see the likes of Simon Callow and he especially does bring some dignity and like in the first Jim Carrey does a fine job carrying the film. However the plot is very predictable and flimsy, and the direction lacks the energy and imagination of that of the first. The film also could have done with being longer consequently some of the characters lacked credibility. Also the pace is not as snappy and smart, when the humour fell flat(like it did one too many times) it felt like a balloon had been popped. The slapstick is very juvenile here, while the script is more childish than sophisticated and for me that was a bad idea. Overall, disappointing but thanks to Carrey it is at least watchable if nothing to go wild about. 4/10 Bethany Cox
Jim Carrey's antics get crazier and more uneven
The movie starts with Ace Ventura failing to rescue a raccoon in a parody of 'Cliffhanger'. He abandons everything to live in a remote Himalyan hideaway. After the Himalayas, he joins Fulton Greenwall (Ian McNeice) in a quest to find a sacred bat and avert a war between with Wachootoo and Wachati tribes.
Jim Carrey is pushing the envelop with even more crazier antics than the original. There are some hilarious stuff here. Sometimes it's even smart like the parody of 'Cliffhanger'. Mostly it's all very juvenile. It has its moment but like its predecessor, this does get tiresome. A big problem is that he does a lot of it out of anger. It makes some of the jokes to fall flat. It's a very uneven movie that tired me out.
