Special effects extravaganza

The third sequel in the long-running series is set firmly in the world of the late 1980s: we're talking lame fashions, big hair, rubbery special effects and a rather uneven tone veering midway between comedy and horror. It's all about what's over the top, with everybody involved aiming to outdo the scares and FX of the previous movies, but in the end none of this can disguise the fact that by this stage the story was wearing very thin. This is nothing more than a supernatural slasher that virtually reprises the plot of the first three films in the series with different characters.

Of course, watching Robert Englund hamming it up will always be a guilty pleasure, and I have to say that the special effects are also pretty impressive. In the days before CGI, the FX team here went all out in creating bizarre and inventive death scenes, most notably a moment involving a giant cockroach. Freddy's resurrection at the outset is gratuitously silly yet somehow still works, paying homage to the old Chris Lee/Dracula resurrections in spectacular fashion. There are lots of able technicians working hard behind the scenes, including Howard Berger and Screaming Mad George, and in a film this reliant on special effects their diligence pays off.

It's hard to review this title objectively, because watching it makes me nostalgic for '80s cinema in all its tacky badness. But I think it's fair to say that this is one of the better sequels out there; it's not frightening in the least, but it is entertaining and it's one of few enjoyable Renny Harlin-directed movies in existence, along with DIE HARD 2 and DEEP BLUE SEA.

Love the cockroach kill but not much else

Kristen Parker (Tuesday Knight) has the ability to pull others into her dreams and is convinced that Freddy Krueger is still out there. Joey Crusel (Rodney Eastman) and Roland Kincaid (Ken Sagoes) are just as sure that he's gone forever. Then Kincaid falls asleep into a junkyard where his dog pees fire opening the ground and Krueger rises from oblivion. Soon the three survivors are dead and their friends led by flustered Alice Johnson (Lisa Wilcox) are hunted down one by one.

This one doesn't have Heather Langenkamp. Patricia Arquette doesn't even return for her role. The three returning survivors are killed off quickly. It is a lost for the franchise to not have a franchise protagonist. At least, Robert Englund is back. It's a hit and miss of weird killings. I really love the cockroach kill but not much else.

Ehhh

I wouldn't say I have ever hated this movie at all but it is a downgrade because this is where they made Freddy a more goofy than the first 3, however this might as well be the best out of 4-6. This is also the first nightmare movie where you really don't care or remember the characters that much. The first movie had memorable characters and the second movie did (for all the wrong reasons) and the third movie at least brought nancy and her father back, these next movies have a familiar pattern though which is any remaining characters from the last movie will be killed off in the next movie to pass on the leading role and I think the only exception where this rule is broken is in the 6th movie because no recurring characters show up in that movie.

The music playing in the intro already feels dated and lets you know you're watching a movie from the late 80s. It's what you expect, Freddy somehow comes back from what was supposed to kill him and everyone thinks Kristen is crazy for thinking that. I know Freddy is obviously in this movie but has Kristen (or anyone who says Freddy is back after he is gone) ever experienced nightmares that just aren't by Freddy? I'm just curious if they blame every bad dream or nightmare on Freddy. There's also a dog named JASON who is WHITE and has BLACK spots... foreshadowing at it's best. Apparently Jason (the dog) is digging up Freddy's bones and his bones form again which causes a few questions, We saw the intro where the girl who praise Freddy are back plus we saw the dog for a second bark at his owner (like I said, these characters are forgettable) to get him to back off since the dog (which I'm sure is controlled by Freddy at this point) was digging up Freddy's bones, the question I have is why is he doing this? He's already back technically plus if Kristen is right about Freddy wanting them to split up in the last movie (assuming he wants to do the same here) why would Freddy show this happening and prove her right about Freddy coming back? It's not like he has to be there, last time he wasn't even in Freddy's world till Kristen called him. Oh well, he dies due to a simple finger knife stab anyways. Next kill proves how Freddy isn't serious anymore, he makes some guy's girl that's on some poster underneath the guys water bed and then says "HOW IS THIS FOR A WET DREAM?" which I do admit is clever and funny. There's also a part where they parody shark movies or something? A sand castle blows up and Freddy even puts sunglasses, this is where it starts to get ridiculous. Freddy pulls off another goofy kill where he says "wanna suck face?" and the ch- OH COME ON IN REAL LIFE SHE'S JUST LOSING BREATH AND NOT LOOKING LIKE THE FLOPPED VERSION SHE DID IN THE DREAM WORLD? What wasted potential! I know I said that I didn't like the walking through walls part in ANOES 3 but at least having everything sucked out of you doesn't really break any physics. This is also when i start to realize these movies start to get boring, these are unforgettable characters with barely any unique personality and seeing them do their boring things just makes this boring. This movie and ANOES 5 sometimes even seem the same, please I've been watching horror movies for like 95% of the time and it's halloween I beg of you please be enterta- at least there is another funny joke where they keep looping the same scene over and over again to kill time. That kill where that girl also turn into a bug is really great and probably the best thing about this movie due to the great effects. OKAY fine, The actual last thing I can say about this movie is when Freddy said "well it ain't doctor Seuss", i guess that was kinda funny. Actually i lied, freddy's death in this movie and the effects for his souls look great is the last good thing about it.

It's funnier and way better than ANOES 2, ANOES 2 is unwatchable but ANOES 4 is watchable once you force yourself to if that makes any sense. It has more fun and memorable scenes than ANOES 2. I can usually tolerate forgettable characters in stuff like Friday the 13th and other movies that aren't popular but when the ANOES is based on characters and those characters aren't that interesting or good, it becomes boring. These characters are no way worse than Jesse from ANOES 2 obviously. It doesn't help that this movie is also similar to ANOES 5 but I will still review it either way, just don't expect it as lengthy as this one.
