2151: A Five Passenger Odyssey

It was not a case of '5th Passenger' being doomed from the start. It was actually a quite neat concept, the title was attention grabbing, the cover did not indicate a cheap film and it even had not one but five 'Star Trek' alumni on board. So there was interest in seeing it despite the less than favourable rating and reviews, having had many instances recently of films with low ratings and poor reviews being that bad so was apprehensive.

'5th Passenger' is not down there with all-time worst films for me. Also didn't think it was irredeemably awful or one of my worst recent viewings, low budget and otherwise. Do have to agree though that '5th Passenger' is a severely flawed film that on the most part is very bad, with most areas poorly executed. Am not going to though be another person to make allegations of false reviews, regardless of whether there is suspicious activity (and there have been many instances of that on IMDb so can sort of understand at the same time),have increasingly found the conspiracy theory to be overused, annoying and ignorant.

What are the good things? Well, the photography is not too bad, there is at least slickness and atmosphere, the editing has coherence if not always finesse and the setting is eerie. In general actually there are far cheaper-looking films out there.

Did not have much of a problem with Doug Jones either. He has definitely been better when his material has been good, but there was some effort coming from him that wasn't there with the rest of the cast.

The cast have very little to work with and mostly do not look comfortable, a lot of rigidity here and most look like they wanted to get it over and done with and go home as fast as they can. The chemistry feels very distinct and never harmonious. Some of these actors can actually act but one would not know that seeing them here The threat has little threat or menace, instead being goofy and not very well used. The effects are artificial looking and like they were made in an afterthought and on the small reminder of an already small budget.

Furthermore, there is nothing natural about the script. So much stilted awkwardness, clichés and cheese, with lots of muddled gibberish thrown into the mix that did not sound like it was properly thought through. Didn't care for any of the characters or find them interesting, development is hardly any while some of their behaviours frustrate (a peeve of mine, thus why it has been mentioned quite a few times by me) and their motivations quite vague. The sound is poorly recorded and obvious and the direction has no character or momentum. The story is neither tense or suspenseful, neither does it engage, with it feeling like an over-extended episode of a failed version of 'Star Trek'. It is also very predictable, very dull with a lot of uneventful stretches and sometimes silly, one can see the ending from miles off.

Summarising, very bad but have seen worse. 2/10 Bethany Cox

Great Disappointment

The name of Marina Sirtis is immediately associated to the character Counselor Deanna Troi, from "Star Trek: The Next Generation". The cast has other names from Star Trek series. With this nostalgia and expectation of a good sci-fi, the unwary viewer may watch "5th Passenger" like I did. Unfortunately, the story is awful and the screenplay is a mess with a confused conclusion. My vote is two.

Last chance to say you love me.

The earth is in turmoil. Lt. Eve Miller (Morgan Lariah) is a non-citizen, but a good pilot who gets harassed by citizens. An asteroid belt damages the mother ship and everyone escapes in pods. Eve gets on a pod with four other people, a pod just for citizens and designed for four. She is the only survivor. She is subjected to memory-eyes as a form of flashback as to what happened to the others. She not only sees herself in her memories plus things that happened when she wasn't in the same pod.

As expected with the talk of pods and biological this and that we would expect some kind of "Alien" knockoff. This one has an interesting twist with minor clues.

Guide: No F-words, sex, or nudity.
