Just another generic horror anthology...

This 2012 horror anthology from Thailand proved to be entertaining enough, albeit it was somewhat generic and predictable.

"3 A.M." have three tales to offer, which are of various entertainment value and interest, of course. Personally, I must admit that I liked "The Wig" segment with the wig shop the most, although it was perhaps also the most commonly used of all horror elements in Asian horror cinema.

The second segment, titled "Corpse Bride", was interesting, although it was just way too predictable, which resulted in the story becoming somewhat trivial and mundane to sit through. It was nicely acted though, and definitely had the most interesting of special effects and make-up effects.

The third and final segment, titled "O.T." was the least interest of all the three tales, as its storyline was just downright unappealing to me. It felt too comical and childish, and I found it to be not really fitting into the frame of the previous two segments.

The acting was adequate throughout all the segments.

For a horror anthology then "3 A.M." ultimately didn't really carve out a place for itself, because it was ultimately just too mundane and chances are that once you've seen it, you will quickly forget about it.

My rating of "3 A.M." lands on a very mediocre five out of ten stars.

The Wig got me!

Made in Thailand by directors Patchanon Tummajira, Kirati Nakintanon and Isara Nadee, this film takes its title from the time that the supernatural happens.

In "The Wig," sisters May and Mint are running the family wig business while their parents travel. They unknowingly buy the hair of a dead woman whose spirit begins to haunt May as she makes it into a new hairpiece. Meanwhile, Mint's friends are acting up and are all killed by the ghost in various ways, including a harrowing scene where one of their heads has been moved to the wig shelf. For some reason, this section totally hit all of the right notes with me.

The "Corpse Bride" presents a mortician willing to aardvark the dead to save them from an abusive ghost in the afterlife. I mean, I guess that's what he was trying to do, but it turns out that the dead woman isn't the angel that she seems to be, no matter how gorgeous her corpse is.

In "O. T.," two bosses delight in playing pranks on their employees involving fake ghosts, but when they go too far and two of their workforce die...well perhaps they shouldn't have ever gotten on that elevator.

This movie was successful and had two sequels, 3 AM: Part 2 and 3 AM: Part 3, which also is known as Aftershock. I assume that this movie would have been much more frightening if I saw it in 3D, as it played in theaters with that technology.

Three Funny and Scary Thai Supernatural Stories

3 A.M. is a Thai horror film divided in three supernatural stories that happen at 3 A.M.:

1) "A Peruca" ("The Wig"): The sisters May (Focus Jirakul) and Mint (Apinya Sakuljaroensuk ) own and work in a wig shop. May is a hard worker while Mint is a selfish teenager. One day, Mint buys hair from woman without knowing that it was stolen from a corpse in the cemetery and makes a wig. Mint brings her boyfriend Lin (Thanawat Prasitsomporn) that makes joke with the wig with her friends Joon (Nayapak Bhumipak) and Pond (Vivid Bavornkiratikajorn). But the spirit is angry and will seek revenge against the teenagers.

This ghost story is predictable but has a surprising conclusion.

2) "A Noiva Cadáver" ("The Bride's Corpse"): The funeral home employee Tos (Toni Rakkaen) and a nurse (Vasana Chalakorn) are hired to prepare the funeral of the just married Cherry (Karnklao Duaysianklao) and Mike (Peter Knight). Tos finds a videotape and he believes Cherry was abused by Mike. He falls in love with the bride and challenges Mike but soon he finds the truth about the couple, with tragic consequences.

This ghost story is weird since it is related to Thai funeral ritual. Again the story happens at 3 A.M. and the scary conclusion surprises.

3) "Hora Extra" ("Overtime"): Karan (Shahkrit Yamnarm) and Tee (Ray MacDonald) own a company and they love to play scary prank on the employees that are working in overtime. Their favorite victims are Bump (Prachakorn Piyasakulkaew) and Nging (Kanyarin Nithinoparath). One night, they play several pranks with tragic consequences.

This ghost story is very original and the best segment. It is hard to know what is prank and what is real, and the conclusion is excellent. My vote is seven.

Title (Brazil): "3 A.M."
